Preseason Home Up (over/under index)

Overrated/Underrated Always-Rated Teams

This is a table of teams' under-/over-ratedness over the span 1989 to present. Teams are sorted by total rating, with the most underrated teams at the top. Only teams rated (in at least one of the preseason consensus and final AP) every season are included in this table.

This table has become fairly useless over time, as only one team has managed to escape at least one year being unranked in both preseason and postseason. In 2008, three of the final five teams left on it -- Miami-Florida, Nebraska, and Michigan -- dropped off, since they were unranked in both preseason and postseason that year. In 2009, we lost Tennessee, the next-to-last remaining team.

Now there is only one team left: Florida State. I include this page mainly for historical reasons, for people who may have found earlier versions of this page via a web search. I have been slowly eliminating links to it from elsewhere on my site, and will eventually delete it.

Additional notes on the table's contents follow the table.

The teams at the top of the table were the most underrated (final poll standing furthest above preseason poll standing) over the span 1989-present. The teams at the bottom of the list were the most overrated (final poll standing furthest below preseason poll standing) over the span 1989-present.

A "zero" in the table indicates that the team's preseason and final rankings were the same that year. Any other number indicates that the team was ranked in at least one of the preseason or final polls, and the number is the difference between the two (with "unranked" counted as 26th).

For more data, on frequently rated teams (eliminating those that only have less than five years' data), see the Teams file. For data on all teams that were rated in even a single preseason or final poll in any year covered, see the All Teams file.

Note: These numbers do not really reflect how good the teams are; they instead reflect how well they lived up to preseason expectations. Teams which are rated every year tend to have higher expectations, and therefore we see that most of them have negative totals.
