Annual Conference Ratings

This is a table of under-/over-ratedness of conferences, calculated by summing up all of the overrated/underrated numbers for conference members for a given year.

Notes:

[1] The WAC ceased play in 2013 and did not really have a logical "successor" conference.

[2] The Mountain West began play in 1999. It was composed of seven upper-echelon "traditional" WAC members and UNLV formerly of the Big West. These teams left the WAC a few years after the WAC expanded to 16 teams. The post-MWC WAC was left with a couple of traditional "lesser lights" from the original WAC, most of the SWC teams not invited to the Big XII, and San Jose State formerly of the Big West. Rather than try to track the "traditional" WAC teams through the various realignments, the accounting done here is strictly by conference membership in each year.
An alternate way of accounting would be to count up the "traditional" WAC (now Mountain West) -- assigning +25 (1996), +34 (1995), and -4 (1993) from the WAC to the Mountain West. Those numbers are due to Brigham Young, Utah, and Colorado State -- all Mountain West teams at the time those points were earned.

[3] Conference USA began play in 1996, its original membership consisting of former minor independents, and Houston from the defunct SWC.

[4] The American Athletic Conference began play in 2013, consisting mostly of remnants of the old Big East. I considered it a successor to the Big East, and combined the two conferences' totals.

[5] The Big XII began play in 1996, and was formed from the Big 8 plus most of the traditionally best SWC teams. For 1993-1995 (the years before the Big XII formed), I used the SWC score plus Big 8 score. This is only a little bit different from using only the Big 8 totals for the Big XII's row in those years, as the SWC's net score was only -7. (All of those points were due to Texas, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M, which did join the Big XII.)

Note: These numbers do not really reflect how good the conferences are; they instead reflect how well the conferences lived up to preseason expectations. The Big West would have a score of zero (since they never had a team ranked in preseason or final polls during this span) but that would not mean they are a stronger conference than those which ended up with negative numbers in a given year.
